On 26 August 2020, we published an article with the headline,
The Global Fund’s COVID-19 emergency funding is running out.” The article stated: The Global Fund needs to raise an additional $5 billion to finance the COVID-19 response to protect the gains made in the fight against the three diseases. The Global Fund hopes to receive
$1.56 billion from the United States, but this remains uncertain as discussions on coronavirus supplemental funding stalls. The Global Fund can still leverage other countries; however, the US is usually considered a catalyst for funding from other countries.
The Secretariat indicated that the $1.56 billion refers to potential funding for the regular Fiscal year 2020/21 appropriations process, and that advocates are asking for $4 billion for the Global Fund in emergency/supplemental funding.
